MUS. Phrase musicale facile à retenir, généralement placée à la fin d'un morceau. Les fossoyeurs de Beethoven terminent leur duo [dans « Fidelio »] sans coda, sans cabalette, sans éclat de voix (H. BERLIOZ, À travers chants, 1862, p. 83).
Prononc. et Orth. Seule transcr. dans LITTRÉ et DG : kà-bà-lèt'. Pour la forme cabaletta, cf. J.-G. PROD'HOMME, Les Symphonies de Beethoven, 1921, p. 63 : ,,Une cabaletta isolée des masses de l'orchestre``. Étymol. et Hist. 1838 cabalette mus. (Ac. Compl. 1842); 1921 id. cabaletta. Empr. à l'ital. cabaletta « id. » attesté dep. le XVIIIe s. (DEI) altération de cob(b)oletta (peut-être sous l'infl. de cabala « cabale », DEVOTO) « petit couplet », attesté au XVIIe s. (Redi dans BATT., s.v. cobbola) dimin. de cobbola (XIVe s., G. Villani, ibid.) prob. empr. à l'a. prov. cobla « couplet » (issu du lat. copula; couple) bien que celui-ci ne puisse rendre compte de la forme cobbola (cf. ital. cobla seulement attesté chez Carducci [1835-1907] dans BATT., s.v. cobbola [cont. occitan]).
